Children Help Design Community Built Play Structure

The children were eager to share their ideas with Dennis and requested everything from tire swings to space ships be part of the playground!

Design Day, November 3, 1998, marked the official beginning for a Community Built Play Structure in Auburn as Designer Dennis Willes of Leathers and Associates sought the input of Auburn's children for the design of their playground.

Designer Dennis Willes spent the afternoon drawing the initial plans unveiled that evening.

"The most important thing that came about during Design Day was the involvement of two generations in the process -- the adults and the children," Susie Thomas, General Coordinator of the project said. Excited children and parents came together for the unveiling of the playground design and organizational plans for its construction during the Town Meeting held that night.

Dennis Willes and nine Architecture and Building Science students from Auburn and Tuskegee Universities met with the school children enlisting their design ideas.

Everyone's input and help will be vital to the success of this project. More than 3,000 volunteers will be recruited over the course of the next few months to assist in the planning and construction of the playground in April. Big, small, young, old -- everyone can help!
